The Scorpion
(Size: 4 cm)
Brace yourself... The only Canadian species of scorpion, Pararuroctonus boreas, is only about one and a half inch long when stretched out!!! Like most scorpions, this little guy is mostly nocturnal, hiding during the day and hunting during the night. It's home range extends from southern Saskatchewan and Alberta, to the Okanagan Valley in B.C., with some reports in south-western Manitoba. This scorpion will hide under logs, rocks, and any other natural debris (But you should still look out for it in other places too!).
In Canada, scorpions are only active in the warm months, generally between May and September. Though poisonous, this guy isn't that lethal. Its sting has been described by some people as that of a bee. If you do get stung though, you should apply a cold compress to the wound or immerse in cold water. An aspirin might help ease the pain (yet again). You should be okay afterwards, unless there's a severe allergic reaction.
