Dock Spider

(Size: leg to leg, an average of 6 cm when full grown)

Don't worry, they're far from lethal. Like the name says, they live on docks and mostly on the shore line. They feed on minnows and aquatic insects. If you thought they were ugly, well, hear this: they can also skim over water! And they get BIG, too.

Once, my dad and I decided to stop at a nearby dock for a break after a whole day of canoeing. We almost flipped over when my dad pulled away his hand from the dock after a HUGE dock spider, as big as his hand, popped out from beneath the structure.

These greyish wonders are known to bite when extremely provoked. Though they also jump, I've fooled around with many dock spiders before and I have never been bitten. When they do bite, the bite leaves a swell that itches like crazy for a few days and doesn't heal fast.
