Horse-, Deer- and Stable-Flies
(Size: 1 and a half to 2 cm)
These are the true buggers if you ask me. They look a bit like blackflies too. They don't bite as much as mosquitoes or blackflies do (thank God), but to me, they hurt much more. The first two are attracted to shiny hair and objects, such as the reflective skin of swimmers. But the latter, the stable-fly, likes biting legs. The big difference between these guys and the mosquitoe is that these guys don't just contend themselves ot the "poke-suck-run" routine, no, no, no, noooo. These guys have fun drilling into you, moving sideways, back and forth, with their WHOLE proboscis, full of small recurved spines at the end. After that, you'll itch like crazy for the rest of the day. I've only been bitten ONCE by a stable-fly, but I can tell you that this guy had certainly ruined my day.
