These guys love cool, fast flowing water to breed, but dislike direct sunlight, small spaces (like your home, tent or camper) and when they bite, they uses saw-like teeth and then lick the blood. Usually, the bite goes unnoticed at first, but will soon begin to itch.
Even though they have a pretty good eyesight, it doesn't stop them from occasionally flying into your mouth, ears, or right up your nose! Beware of the edges of your clothing; those are prime blackfly biting ranges. Besides that, the same measures of bite prevention as the mosquito apply for the blackfly.
